What is Depression?

The staff at StressCare Behavioral Health, Inc. have many years of experience helping people learn to cope more effectively with stress.

Depression is more than feeling sad or blue once in awhile. When life feels like a burden, when the sadness is prolonged or very intense, depression may be occurring.

What are the Symptoms of Depression?

  • Decreased interest or pleasure in activities
  • A persistent sad, anxious or empty feeling
  • Decreased satisfaction with life
  • Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, worthlessness or guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions
  • Sleep changes such as decreased sleep, increased sleep, difficulty falling asleep, early morning awakenings, difficultly staying asleep
  • Appetite/eating changes such as too little or too much eating, increased or decreased appetite
  • Excessive crying
  • Decreased energy or fatigue
  • Memory or concentration problems
  • Physical aches and pains
  • Irritability, restlessness, hyperactivity
  • Lack of interest in sex
  • A wish for death or thoughts of suicide
  • Reduced capacity to give and receive affection

When five or more of these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, a clinical depression may be occurring.

How is Depression Treated?

The most effective treatment for clinical depression is a combination of psychotherapy and medication. For people who are experiencing mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression,  psychotherapy alone or medication alone may be enough. Psychotherapy typically includes techniques to change unhelpful thinking patterns, strategies to increase valued or important activities, and discussions about important relationships. When you meet with the trained and licensed staff at StressCare Behavioral Health, Inc., we will work with you to plan the treatment interventions that will be most helpful for your situation.
